How to Participate
American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most respected youth athletic programs, with an alumni base that includes over half of today’s Major League Baseball players. Each year, about 3,500 teams compete, creating opportunities for players, coaches, umpires, and volunteers to get involved.
Players can join by contacting their local Legion post and trying out for the nearest team. If they don’t make one roster, they can continue trying out with the next‑closest post until they find a fit.
Coaches who want to start a team can reach out to their state’s department baseball chairman to receive rules, insurance details, and registration materials.
Umpires are typically assigned through local associations, and departments may nominate officials for national tournaments.
Volunteers are always needed — from keeping stats to helping on game day — and can connect through their local post.
American Legion Baseball remains a welcoming, growing program with a role for anyone who wants to support youth, teamwork, and community.
About American
Legion Baseball
American Legion Baseball, founded in 1925, has grown into one of America’s most enduring youth sports programs, built on values of sportsmanship, equality, health, and citizenship. As the document explains, it has “taught hundreds of thousands of young Americans the importance of sportsmanship, good health and active citizenship,” while surviving financial struggles, the Great Depression, and national hardships thanks to strong community support and long‑standing help from Major League Baseball. Today it operates in all 50 states and Canada, offering competition for ages 13–19, scholarships, and national awards, and has produced 82 Hall of Famers along with countless MLB players, managers, and leaders in fields far beyond sports.
